As a continual learner of all ways that Young Living is beneficial to my family and I, I am far from an expert. What I do know is what has helped my family (four and two legged). This is one of the reasons why I have enjoyed being a member of the Making Waves / Vets and Pets team. Not only am I privileged to learn from three veterinarians and a CCA, but they are always available to me when I have a question.

Using essential oils to create a habit

With New Year's Eve right around the corner, I felt that this topic was apropos. Habits, good or bad, form over time but how much time is that exactly? You may hear 21-28 days, but in fact each person is unique and that it may take much longer for some while others pick up habits in a matter of a couple/few weeks. The formation of a bad habit and subsequently trying to override that bad with a good one can take even longer. 

Often times we make resolutions to change and/or improve as part of a new year. We all know that the running joke with this is that it doesn't stick very long, so why bother?! But why doesn't it work? We can be most critical of ourselves and our shortcomings. If we don't follow this preconceived ideal of doing this resolution Every. Single. Day, we criticize ourselves and end up giving up because it's easier to do that than stick with something. When we understand that it is unrealistic to think that a change happens over night or in a very short time frame, it may make the transition into the formation of a better habit more attainable. 

What is the habit that you wish to form? This can also play a factor in how long it will actually take you to make it an automatic response in your day. It may be easier to learn to drink a glass of water everyday with lunch than it would to be up at dawn to run a mile. Also, the way in which you define "habit" can also have an impact. Merriam-Webster defines it as "an acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary... a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior ". 

When we are at conferences, we discuss forming "habits" with the pets when it comes to oils. Often times it is relative to a Pavlovian ideal in that if you introduce an essential oil while the pet is stressed in some form, it has the capability to have the opposite affect than you wish for it to have. For instance, Lavender is often associated with a calming effect. If always introduced while the pet is stressing, it has the increased potential to experience stress when it encounters that scent. When you have lavender during positive moments during a day, when they need that extra help to balance out their emotions, it will be useful to use. The more frequent the oils are used, the faster the pet becomes acclimated to smelling them. People can have similar experiences. 

Habits have the capacity to form in the manner of positive or negative reenforcement as well as repetative behavior. Think about approaching a new habit while in a balanced emotional/mental state. Your view may decrease in "chore-like" or "must" attitude and increase in a positive "can-do" approach when feeling an uplifted mood. Many different essential oils support a balanced emotional/mental nervous system. 


You may have to get into a "habit" of grabbing your oils and using them more often. By making the accessible, they remain in your eyesight, they are readily available and you do not need to hunt for them. By placing them in areas that make sense to you they become part of the daily routine after some time. Keep those oils that you enjoy because that will help to reenforce the positive aspects of them and you'll be more inclined to use them more frequently. Research just a tadbit about you oils or ask someone who knows about them and find ones that compliment your goals. If you need to create a soothing space for your new habit, lavender, Peace & Calming, Stress Away, rose, ylang ylang are the types of oils you will want. If it's an active habit, peppermint, lemon, citrus fresh, black pepper, Awaken, En-R-Gee may be some options.

When using a certain scent, it may help you establish a trigger when forming the habit and beyond. It may assist in establishing a certain behavior that you want to become regular. If you enjoy it, it's even better. For instance, I use cedarwood for bedtime. I know that if I want to help myself prepare for sleep, I begin diffusing this about 30-45 minutes prior to bed in the area of the house that I am in. This has formed a couple of habitual behaviors. 1. I keep cedarwood on my nightstand next to the diffuse 2. cedarwood prompts my body to begin the unwinding process. Now I have been using this particular oil for about 4 years but I continue to do this type of behavior with other oils that I use for other good habits. I keep my Vitality Drops near my water bottles. This way I grab water and add my drops because it's accessible. I use frankincense, ylang ylang, and cedarwood on my skin. These are in the bathroom along with the orange oil that I use when brushing. The habits I am forming are continual by one of two things....knowing I haven't used that particular oil yet in my day OR the teeth brushing (etc) triggers my use of orange for my teeth. To me, this is a win-win!

So, it can take up to 254 days to form a habit, if you remain committed to it for the long haul. Everyone skips days, even when they are used to doing that work out every day or eating that salad for lunch, what we don't need is to feel bad about it. Pick up the next day and don't give up! Go grab your Motivation, Believe, Common Sense, Forgiveness, and Highest Potential because you have got this habit down in less than a year!! Happy 2021!!

Ways of Application for Your Young Living Essential Oils

You have just received your kit from Young Living. Excitement and intrigue has taken over. You tear open the box with wide eyed wonder … you open each bottle to smell them. You may even open a Ningxia Red to taste how great it is. But then it hits you; the uncertainty of the what, where, when, why, and HOW! 

I am here to help you get through this temporary stunned inaction. You see, taking that first step always seems the hardest. Don't beat yourself up over uncertainty or even a delayed response in actually using these terrific essential oils. It's never too late to begin. So whether you received your kit months and months ago or just received your kit today, we're here during these uncertain steps into this Young Living journey.

Let's this introduction with applications. Depending upon who you talk to, what you research, and where you live, these may vary ever so slightly. Aromatic - directly and indirectly, topical application, and ingestion are the three types of methods in which your essential oils will get into your system. For this blog, we will focus mainly on smelling and topical and only slightly touch on ingestion as it is by far one of the most personal-choice options. 

First and foremost, you need to know the quality of your essential oils that you are using. I only discuss, reference, and recommend Young Living products as this is the company that I use for myself and whole family - two and four legged. I trust the quality, the source, the Seed to Seal(R) process. Also be aware of these criteria when using essential oils: Quality (), Quantity (user dependent), Frequency (user dependent). Young Living has the quality checked off, the rest is determined by the user. This is where research, asking someone who is knowledgeable, or with experience can help you navigate quantity and frequency. The concept of Less IS More is a great way to begin using your essential oil no matter who it's designated for or which method you are using. It is always easier to add more than take away. So let me begin...


Aromatic - done through the olfactory system, this is deemed to be an excellent source for acquiring the possible benefits from essential oils due to the fact that it is directly connected to the limbic system which also affects other areas of the brain that are closely connected to it. Remember that animals have a much keener sense of smell than humans. (Previous blog made solely about olfaction). Research is important as species and breeds differ. 

Scents can be distributed by diffusing or direct inhalation. 

  1. Never burn an essential oil
  2. Your body is a natural diffuser due to body heat
  3. Use collars, bandanas, bedding, clothing, jewelry
  4. Apply to hands and directly inhale
  5. Use aromatherapy inhaler - can purchase or DIY

Types of diffusers that you can purchase are:

  1. Nebulizing 
    1. uses the essential oil bottle directly
    2. uses greater quantities as there is no addition of water or other media
    3. greater concentration into air
  2. Ultrasonic
    1. smaller quantities needed
    2. uses water
    3. little noise
    4. diffuser dependent for space size
  3. Heat (burning)- WE DO NOT RECOMMEND!
    1. alters the chemical constituents of oils
  4. Evaporation
    1. uses an air flow for dispersing
    2. blown around space quickly
    3. not evenly dispersed

From using greater quantities such as the nebulizing system to much less with the ultrasonic method, the quality of the oil will make a difference in the longevity (how long it stays) and results. Have fun with the many DIY options by making an ornament or jewelry to diffuse oils. This is a personal touch to sharing the awesomeness that is Young Living.


Topical application is another way to get essential oils into your body. Remember that what is in your air space will also be on your skin at some point just at a lesser quantity. This method can be great for direct focus on an area of the body.

Types of topical application can be:

  1. mix with a carrier oil of your choice
  2. neat
  3. mix with ointment, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, creams, soaps, salves, salts for scrubs/soaks

As we are individuals and subsequently react differently to things that we are around, please be aware of what you may be sensitive to or have an allergy to. If you have questions or concerns, contact your pcp. 

Using neat can be a used for those spots of focus. If you are sensitive to neat, add a carrier oil. This assists in diluting and dispersing the oil to a larger area making it less concentrated. This is why many people opt for a carrier oil. You have the opportunity to still have benefits and it spreads easy. Adding to ointments, lotions, shampoos, etc is another way to get your oils onto the skin. Add a drop onto your finger tip and rub onto the nape of your neck, at the collar bone, wrists, bottoms of your feet, crown of your head, temples (with caution of eyes), behind ears, on jawline, etc. 

There are many DIY options to make with your essential oils. Try a foot scrub, bath soak, or even a lip balm! One year I made sugar scrubs for everyone on my Christmas list. They smelled wonderful and were made from the heart.


Ingestion, some are comfortable and some are not. This is a personal choice. I like to share this method with others because it is an option. This approach is definitely a LESS IS MORE rule of thumb. Trust me as I made Thanksgiving dinner last year with essential oils and I added too much to my apple pie. Let's just say that I was the only one who ate it and it was not my favorite. 

Dip a toothpick into the bottle and mix into your liquid, food, etc. Use a clean toothpick with each insertion into the bottle. Use A DROP into what you are putting it into. This is not the diffuser where too many drops is still fine. Common ingested essential oils are peppermint, lemon, lime, DiGize, just to name a few. If  you have questions or concerns, I highly suggest not only research but discussing with a professional such as an herbalist - lucky that we have our knowledge base in Dr. John, Dr. Deb, and Dr. Susan.

Remember that health and wellness modalities are integrative and essential oils have the ability to work great in conjunction with them. It does not have to be an "all or nothing" and if you choose to use one method over another or only particular essential oils, we support you! Inhaling Young Living essential oils is a great method for your dog


Most of the time, I just apply the oils to my hands and pet my pups. There are times when I apply to myself while taking care of my pups or even let them smell the bottle, with the cap on. Don't forget the good for everyone method of diffusing your essential oils. (Never burn or heat, always cold diffuse - water)

All of these methods are useful. This is because the olfactory system is a direct link to the brain. As can be seen in the graphic, the locations of the brain and the receptor cells are close so that the scents that are received can be interpreted quickly. 

With that being said, that direct connection affects the body differently than if you applied to skin or even ingested it. When essential oils are applied to the skin or ingested, first they are absorb through skin or mucous membranes, then into the circulatory system traveling to all other bodily systems, finally being secreted through organs, ie skin, lungs, kidneys, and/or bowels. This process can last approximately four to eight hours. When inhaled and the olfactory system is stimulated, it affects the limbic system resulting in the effects upon the hormonal and/or autonomic nervous system, ending right into the brain. This process is longer lasting and has less barriers to go through ie skin, organs, membranes...

Due to the fact that canines' primary source of communication with the world around them is through their sense of smell, the portion of the brain controlling smell is about 40 times larger than that of humans. Although this is so much larger in canines, their brains are about one tenth the size of a human's brain. This goes to show how important scent is to dogs. 

Another factor is the length of the snout and skin folds surrounding the area, including the length of the ears. This is why breeds like Bassets and Bloodhounds have longer ears. It helps to stir up and collect scent particles sweeping them up into the nose. According to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) a dog's ability to smell is approximately 1,000 times keener than us. The two chambered nasal cavity allows for around 220 million olfactory receptors - humans have approximately 5 million. Of course the receptors vary per breeds, but the point is that they have an extremely fine tuned sense of smell. So when you are told "a little goes a long way", this is particularly true for introducing and using Young Living essential oils with dogs.

Each dog is likely to have preferences too. I have two, an Old English Sheepdog (M) and a Pit-mix (F). My boy only likes a few near his face. This means I often will put only a drop or two into my palms, rub them together, and pet him. He is always open for pets, so this is a good trick for me with him. Now my girl on the other hand enjoys most Young Living essential oils I have put in front of her. She even likes the Vetiver and Valerian combo I put on my feet at night. There is a reason why it's on my feet HAHA!

Overall, my message is that when introducing an essential oil to your pup, do not force them and take it slow with the top of the bottle on. This will help when you are adding it to yourself or onto their body. Do not overwhelm them and there is generally an alternative you could try instead. My boy loves StressAway but not Peace & Calming or Gentle Baby! I know, I shake my head too at the head turn from Peace & Calming. But don't worry, I get it on him through my snuggles. :)

Points on the Paw - Places to Safely Put Oils for Your Pup

One of the biggest questions I hear when it comes to pets and essential oils is "How do I apply them". Our veterinarians have over 15 years of experience, each, they have training in herbs, acupuncture, chiropractic, etc. What I can offer is my personal experiences from hands-on application and research. I can share what I have learned over the last 5 years and what I would do with my pups.

Just like humans, our pets have Vita Flex points on their paws. When compared to the general areas on our feet to the general areas of the paws, we can see similarities. As our feet are more exposed and the sections are more defined, with our pup's paws it is more subjective and about getting the oil onto the approximate area. It still follows the pathway of head to toe concept. Mind you that for a pup this is more compact and centralized. 

For me, I do apply to my feet as well as to the feet of my kids often. This comes in handy when the scent isn't a favorite but it's a beneficial oil to use for the moment. 

As dogs have an increased sense of smell, this is a good option because it isn't near their face or snout. If your pup is ticklish like my Old English Sheepdog, a quick swipe in the general area should be sufficient. Although you may want to do this several times. I use a coconut oil as it's support him in several ways. His skin and hair like the coconut oil and it helps to disperse the essential oil. You need to determine what is good for your pup though. Each breed and each individual pup are unique. This means that what can be used on one can possibly not work well for another. Gatsby (the Sheepdog) enjoys the Cedarwood that I use with him. My pit-mix, Ivory, much prefers Lavender. When using an essential oil and a carrier oil, make sure that there is no reaction before applying to large areas. A test patch is just as important on pets as it is for people. 

If your pup has an acute or chronic condition, always discuss with your veterinarian. There are many out there that are open to assisting you with safe usage of essential oils with your pets. Drs. Rykoff, Albright, and Hanover are perfect examples. As integrative vets, they use Young Living along with other modalities to support your pet's health. Do some research. Along with asking the veterinarians about this or that, I researched and learned. 

So, as you apply the essential oils to your pups paws, take note in the areas that have points to organs and other body areas. Don't worry if you aren't on the exact spot. The best part of essential oil application is that it absorbs and spreads easily, especially in a carrier oil.

The Things We Learn - Part 2



I previously wrote about the toxins related to candles, what the by-products are, and why they are not good for us. There are so many other products in our homes, ones that we use daily, that contain even more toxins. While researching, it was actually pretty scary and to know that many companies are still using chemicals that are known to call some kind of illnesses is so sad to me. Reiterating that the word "fragrance" on any product can contain up to 300 different synthetic chemicals and only one little word is required to be listed due to it being a proprietary recipe. 

There are many other products in our homes that need to be evaluated and alternatives considered. This isn't just a Young Living ploy, it's because the toxins in our household products are scary. It is as simple as that. How do we become toxic?

There are three methods: Ingestion, Absorption, and Inhalation

Remember that your skin is your largest organ. Just your large and small intestines alone, the average length is approximately 28 feet. Imagine that your lungs are approximately 80-100 square meters in size. This makes for an extremely large quantity of ways that harmful chemicals can get into our bodies, sometimes without our knowledge or control. But, what if I told you that you do have a choice to remove many of these in your personal area? What I mean is your home. Your home is a sanctuary. It is supposed to be your safe place. Let me tell you about what is happening in your home.

Toxins 101


  • AKA - DEP, DBP, DEHP, and Fragrance
  • Found in:
    • cleaning 
    • lotions
    • body washes
    • hair care
    • cosmetics

Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicities, and cancer

  • Avoid fragranced products - unless naturally done
  • Find "Phthalate-Free" 
  • Options with no DBP, DEHP, DEP


  • AKA - PCE, PERC, Tetrachloroethylene
  • Found in: 
    • dry cleaning 
    • degreasers
    • water repellants
    • paint removers
    • glues
    • sealants
    • lucbricants

Perchloroethylene has been linked to multiple types of cancers - esophageal, kidney, cervix, and bladder - linked as a neurotoxin, irritant to respiratory system, vision problems, abnormal heartbeat, memory loss, etc

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling products containing this chemical
  • reduce the items dry cleaned 
  • Test well water
  • proper ventilation for your home

Triclosan cause health concerns as an endocrine disruptor impacting the proper thyroid function, causing environmental toxicity, causing bacteria resistance, possible adverse effects on the immune system. There has been evidence that shows that it was effective in preventing gingivitis

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

  • AKA - SLS, SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate), ALS (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate), etc
  • Found in:
    • shampoos
    • toothpastes
    • mouthwashes
    • body washes
    • soaps
    • detergents
    • shaving creams
    • bubble baths
    • hand/body creams
    • etc

Sodium Laureth Sulfate; with many other names on labels such as Sodium lauryl sulphate, sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt, sodium dodecyl sulfate, etc; is a skin and eye irritant. Harmful to the environment - fish and other water fauna. High concentrations may be linked to hormone interruption. Contamination during the processing by Dioxane may also be a risk, which Dioxane has its own possible health risks and lasts much longer in our bodily systems. 

  • opt for sulfate free products - research the multiple names and avoid in your products
  • read labels 
  • change mindset from foaming/bubbles = clean 

There have been two struggles that I have faced while going through changes in my household product choices. First, as mentioned in Part 1, was the disposal of my scented candles. The next struggle is reconciling that foam/bubbles does not mean clean and it certainly does not equate safe. There are some products that can contain up to 30% in concentration of SLS, no wonder there is irritation. 

Example: I switched to a no-sulfate shampoo; Young Living's Copaiba Vanilla Shampoo. I was so used to foaming and a feeling to my hair that I thought was clean. The sulfate free shampoo did not foam like I wanted and I confess that there was way too much shampoo used in the first week or two. I did begin to notice that my hair felt softer/silkier, and I adjusted to the less bubbles. Now looking back on the health of my hair before vs. now, before was more of a stripped feeling and now it is less frizzy. I am glad that I made the switch.

QACs / QUATS are associated with contact dermatitis, triggering of asthma or new onset, eye and mucous membrane injuries, and linger on surfaces creating possible long-term issues; rashes, irritations to lungs, skin, eyes, etc. Increased usage has begun to produce antibiotic resistance. There is more research being done with exposures causing fertility and endocrine issues.

As I began my research, my goal was to explain why essential oils are a good option or addition to everyone's life no matter what that may look like. We are subjected to many chemicals in our lives and having control in one important part of our world of what we put in and on our bodies is a wonderful feeling. I am glad that I have made a positive step forward in helping myself and my family by reducing exposures to unnecessary things in our products. I Spy ... Young Living Products under $25

Often times we are faced with the question of cost. I know many people that spend more on products than I do and yet I hear this often, "Why is it so expensive?". When you think about it in two basic ways:

  • More like bulk buying 
  • More items under $25 than you think

Bulk buying. This explanation was provided to me during a discussion pertaining to the repetitive nature of this question. I thoroughly enjoyed this because it made so much sense. When I tell people that "less is more" when it comes to Young Living products, I am not joking or just trying to get someone to buy the products. Take the Thieves household cleaner for instance. The bottle itself wholesale is $22.50, but when you break it down, you are saving so much money compared to purchasing multiple cleaning products from the big named stores. With the oils, I can use 1 drop compared to the 5+ drops of another brand, resulting in longer usage per bottle. 


Did you realize that there were so many products under $25? When it is listed like this, I was amazed by the amount. This isn't a company that is trying to make a greener lifestyle impossible. It is quite the opposite. Young Living is committed to making their products accessible to everyone. 


Before you discount Young Living as a viable option for all of your needs, consider these: Bulk buying decreases the need to purchase items more frequently because you need to use less. The things we learn - Part 1


As a person with a passion for essential oils and all of their benefits, I come across some push back. I suppose that this is normal for several reasons. 1. People want to know the why's of something. 2. There will always be those that are negative towards everything. These are not exclusive to others, you will come across these types of people and they will want to push your buttons. So, research is a good way to not only help yourself develop, but to help your conviction is why they are better resulting in helping your cause; sharing your passion with those not yet involved.

I have read and re-read many articles, some published by universities, some by government agencies, and those written by just "regular people". What seems to be a common theme is what we are putting in and around our bodies is scary! This is where my conviction of working towards a greener lifestyle gets stronger, for myself, my kids, and my pups.

The average household contains approximately 62 toxic chemicals in our everyday products. This is from the pans we use, the makeup we put on each day, to the cleaners we use to make our homes "safer" and free from germs of all sorts. We use cleaners because we want to stay healthy, but is having 62 toxic chemicals in our homes really better?

Did you know that when you burn those pretty candles that smell SO delicious, if they are made with paraffin wax, when burned they produce two chemicals; benzene and toluene. Benzene is a cancer-causing chemical and toluene is known to affect the central nervous system. YIKES! I will tell you that my candle usage was out of control I loved them so much. I always had a honeydew this or that going. Peach was another scented candle that I adored. Giving those up were difficult and that was before I even knew about the chemicals that they produce. 

I have been a hard-core Young Living user for about four years now. In all honesty, candles were the hardest to purge from my house. You think that you are making your home smell good, helping to make it presentable to others, inviting even. But when you learn about the products that you are using, it's frightening.

To take it one step further think about it like this... the soot that is given off drifts onto the floors, the countertops, all the surfaces that are exposed and even those like dishes and silverware. When cabinets and drawers are open, they are open to the air, which now has this soot floating around. Then, think about landing on you, your children (if you have them), and your pets. Skin is the biggest organ and now you are not only breathing in this soot, but it is landing on your skin. The toxins are absorbed into your body, the body of your children, and that of your pets. Kids put their fingers into their mouths. Pets lick themselves and if they are anything like mine, it is a constant thing, but that is for another post. 

There are ways to remove those toxins that are a result from burning, included in the scents themselves or the wick. Did you know that some wicks out there actually contain lead? What? That is horrible. Don't forget about the smell of the candle. Did you know that the word "fragrance" can contain up to 300 man-made chemicals. As it is often a proprietary blend and considered a company trade secret, it is not mandated to include the chemicals that are included in that simple word "fragrance". A common toxin in these scented products is phthalate. This can be linked to many health issues including those that affect children such as ADHD and other behavioral issues. 

How do you let go of these precious candles? There are alternatives. First you can purchase candles that are made with Soy or Beeswax. An even easier option, which actually might save some money, is buying and diffusing essential oils. Young Living essential oils contain nothing other than the essential oil. You can make your own scents too. Try making a blend for Fall = 6 drops of Orange, 1 drop of both Patchouli and ginger. There are so many options that you will always find something new to smell and enjoy.

When you break it down into tangible terms of what it is, where it goes, and what you can do about it, things make a bit more sense. The ways to make this change are available and may take some commitment in the beginning, but you will be happy that you did. If you would like help in taking that first step, let us know! Our Rescue Furry Family's Beginning

My kids somehow always convince me to go look at the furry animals that are up for adoption. I half willingly and unwillingly go as I know that it just ends in heartbreak because it never fails that we find that one perfect feline or canine. My daughter enjoys looking at and dreaming of getting a rat, I on the other hand shy away from them. The thought of getting bit just makes me nervous.

A couple of days earlier my oldest son requested to get this cat. Now he is almost 23 years old and in the last 15 years has not asked for a pet. To hear him ask for this particular cat, that he felt connected to, I was so conflicted. With the family changes though, I told him that if he could find a temporary home for him, for a few days to a week, he could bring him home. This made him extremely happy and we asked my best friend to keep him. She agreed and this is the beginning of Higgins' story. 

Higgins came home the same day as Ivory... The three youngest kids and I needed to get out of the house so we decided to go to adoption day that we saw advertised a couple weeks earlier. There really was no intention of adding another family member, especially since Higgins was going to join our family soon. But like most people when they look at all of the little faces, you cannot resist. Honestly, I originally was looking at another cat. There was this tortoise colored female that was just so sweet and playful, she got my vote.

Then we made our way back to the dogs. There were all sorts, big and small, puppies and adults. You could see on their faces that they all wanted to be picked. The longing for a forever home glinting in their eyes. It pulls at the heart strings and you wish you could adopt all the animals and love them all. In real-life though, this just isn't plausible.

Sitting on a little bed were a set of sisters, one black and one white. Just adorable. The white little girl, Ivory, sat by herself as the black puppy, Onyx, came over to us to get a pet and some rubs. Onyx had a sign that she may be going home with a family. Feeling horrible that one of these two would be left without the other, I agreed to come back the next day. If Ivory was still there, then it was meant to be and we could get her. 

I told my oldest daughter about the tortoise cat and she was intrigued. Having shared a couple of pictures with her, she wanted to come with us the following day to check her out. We all headed back, me almost certain that both would be gone, to see if everyone was still there. With a heavy heart, Onyx did not get adopted and Ivory was still there. I am true to my word and we began the process of adopting Ivory. I was so very sad for Onyx, but I could not adopt both. She cried and we cried too. We must have looked pathetic. The adoption person assured us that it wouldn't be long before she would also get adopted, but that did not alleviate my heavy heart. 

But on a brighter note, my daughter adopted Cutie the Cat and we got Gatsby a best friend. Upon signing the papers for Ivory, I put some Valor onto my hands and stroked her. She was nervous and I don't blame her. Leaving her sister, going into a car, out into the big world, that is all very scary. I do not know her previous life history except that even at 4-ish months, she has lived in a shelter her whole life.

Now we are a happy house of activity. I continue to use our essential oils around her. She is definitely a bit more of a crier than Gatsby was, but some Peace & Calming in her bedding is a good start. A little lavender and wherever we are diffusing is what she has been exposed to from day one at home. Even Higgins, as a feline, has been exposed to Young Living essential oils from day one in our family. My son diffuses often. He is responsible with the oils around the cat because I have told him the importance of it. The door is left open, Higgins has the option to leave or stay in the room. 

Safety is what is important when it comes to family, two or four legged. The journey for our furry family is just beginning, but we will do it together, safely and knowledgeably. As I feel it's important to maintain your health, it is just as important for your pets too. Think of where they live, spend all of their time, all of the things that they come into contact with. How many icky butts they sniff and pee spots that they find to smell, they could use a dose of less synthetic chemicals in their lives. Think about it... we all want the best for our family members, two and four legged loved ones.

Feline, Canine, Equine and All In Between

I do only own a dog. I do only have six children. I am only one person amongst hundreds of thousands of essential oil users, so what do I know? Would you believe me if I told you that I don't always know everything, who really does? You can become certified and educated but that does not even mean you know all there is to know. If you do know everything ... can we be friends? I spend far too much time researching...

Hopefully you have caught onto my sarcasm. I actually enjoy doing my research and learning, be it on my own or with someone's guidance. My guidance comes in the form of my bosses, co-workers, friends, like-minded people, and the many other people that have experience. The wide-web provides us all with a double edged sword. It can provide a fountain of information, but not all is correct. Some of it is bias, some is just foolery, some is to scare you.... as of yesterday, Dr. "Website" diagnosed me with an incurable disease that I cannot even pronounce due to symptoms of achy muscles, congestion, and a headache. 

Anyway. Since I began my journey incorporating essential oils into my life, I have heard some interesting things. Some of those things cause wonderment while others cause me concern. Many of the things I have learned about animals and essential oils have been from my bosses and other long-time users. They have used Young Living essential oils with horses, birds, cats, dogs, and many other species of animals.

Think of it like this... say your gallbladder needs to be removed. Are you going to go search Dr. "Website" for a tutorial? Are you going to hunt down that "I'm not a doctor in real life, but I play one on TV", or would you like to get your gallbladder removed by a knowledgeable doctor that has done it many times previously? Personally, I will go with the last option. My bosses are knowledgeable with many years of applying essential oils into their practices with animals along with their personal use. 

When I first got my puppy, he was having intestinal issues. I knew I wanted to try a holistic option first, so I asked my boss. In two days, my pooch was good to go, literally. I went to the veterinarians to find out the best food for him, the best shot schedule, and all things canine because they know not only through experience but through education. We talk about the options and the outcomes. Shouldn't this be the type of relationship you want with your beloved pet's doctor? Someone that knows you, knows your values, knows different options, and takes everything into consideration to help you make the best informed decision. 

As with anything that you put into and onto you, your family, or your pets, following directions are important. Essential oils are not something to just haphazardly ingest, apply, or diffuse. A doctor does not dilute an antibiotic, it is prescribed at a different dose dependent upon the recipient. The frequency of doses is dependent upon the need and the subject being administered to. These rules are just as important with essential oils as they are with any medication. Everything has a set of instructions for a reason, to keep us all as safe as possible. When you find a vet that uses a diverse set of modalities to help you keep your pet healthy, feel free to ask them questions. Voice your concerns, present your questions, and together come up with a game plan that best suits your pet.

If you do not discredit aspirin due to hearing something negative, you should not be doing that with other things either. I get very disheartened when people tell me that I shouldn't be using this or that on my dog, myself, or even my children. Just like many things in my life, I have sought out doctors that share a mutual belief, but can direct me safely in my own journey. My bosses and fellow essential oil users allow things to work complementary to one another. They have successfully used Young Living essential oils in their practices for many years, but began in their personal lives. Never have they ever directed someone to use any method that was harmful. 

One veterinarian has cats, dogs, and a bird in the clinic. Diffusers are on in each room. Each room may have a different oil diffusing, but it is known what works for each animal. This is because of research, hands-on experience, and knowing issues and what to look for. My own dog does not want to be near a bottle of Raven or Eucalyptus, but does not mind being in the room with us while it is diffusing. Always keeping the door open as an option for him to leave, I give him the choice. Even being in the room for a little while, I believe that he is getting benefits just like myself and my kids. If you are unsure of what you can diffuse, how close it can be to your pet (such as a bird or cat), then you need to be responsible and research. Ask someone with experience. Ask your veterinarian. If they do not know, express your desire to learn more and ask for a reference. 

I have heard vets talking about being a client's chiropractic vet for their horse, but not the regular vet. This is actually nice to hear because it shows the complementary nature of all modalities. Just like I have a chiropractor, family doctor, and I use essential oils. The same can be true for your beloved pets! What I am trying to say is that I know vets that have successfully used Young Living essential oils with various canines, felines, equine, birds, and other animal species. I trust my people to keep me steered in a safe direction, shouldn't you feel the same? 

My family would like to make additions to our family in the future. Not the human kind, but feline, and I will continue to use my Young Living essential oils. I will practice safety. That is the name of the game; safety. Don't be scared into inaction or intolerance because of someone else's bad experience. We do not know the complete story nor all of the circumstances. It was worth it for me to try essential oils, it may just be worth it for you too.

When the time is right, I will be Here


Are you like me or is it that I am more like you? I know that I hesitate. Often times I over analyze and if I don't think that it'll fit into my schedule, I may overlook it. Time passes and I come across it again, then WHAM! I find myself wanting to try, to learn, and understand that I should not have waited the first time. This is how Young Living was for me. 

This is my life: I have spent the better half of my life as a parent. My oldest is almost 23, I will soon be 44. I am a mom to six, stepmom to two with a grandson, and have a large fuzzy dog. I generally have two jobs and graduated college in 2011; my  fifth child was born in December of that same year with the addition of the sixth in 2014. In a nutshell, I shied away from many things that may have been a little extra work.

My friend brought up many times the usefulness, as well as the benefits of, essential oils over the course of about six years. We were talking one day and I brought up an issue that my oldest son was having and he suggested peppermint to me. He gave me a bottle, but after we went through it, I went to the health store and bought another bottle. Well, it just was not the same; not even close to the same. But I was still not ready.

Shortly thereafter, I had a change in my personal life and Young Living was presented to me again but to help my friend with a business aspect. Obviously I didn't say no, I needed it. This is truly where my journey started, six years after being presented with Young Living essential oils. It took a drastic life altering moment to prompt my forward movement. This is common and happens to most of us. We stay on a path where life is comfortable and/or predictable until one day it isn't. I know that this has happened to you. It happens to all of us. Some in our personal lives, some in work or social situations, but it happens to be a large driving force resulting in an alternative route. 

Young Living is such a positive portion of my life and that of my children, that I feel bad that I didn't take that first step many years ago. Maybe I just wasn't ready. The cosmos was waiting for this particular time in my life to open my mind, but no matter why it took so long for me to "come around", I am glad that I did. It has elicited a change that has ignited  a passion for a greener life, more awareness to my family's health, a different way of seeing maintenance, and excitement of feeling in control.

Please know that I do firmly believe that Western and holistic medicines can and should coexist. I do not subscribe to one being better than the other. I just appreciate the options that I now have in a health routine. I like the versatility that essential oils have as I can apply it to myself, my children, my dog, and can be used to promote mental and physical health.

I have found that the older that I get, the more aware I am of my surroundings, my options, and the need for me to help ensure that my children, their children, will have a better world to live in. I am only one person, but if I can show my children then I have become seven as they will follow my lead. If all actions have a cascade effect, then I am not stagnant in action nor am I complacent. I am an active participant in change for without one step forward, there is no movement at all.

My job is working with essential oils and other Young Living products. Supporting others who want to take a proactive approach to incorporating essential oils into their life is my passion. I go to events, I talk with people and I share experiences. I am a vessel for change. Are you ready to take that step or leap in a different direction? 5 reasons to keep Lemon handy in the kitchen

Lemon and Lemon Vitality ™ essential oils are superheroes in the kitchen. They can combat an endless variety of kitchen catastrophes with their bright, freshening power. We’ve put together these all too familiar situations to help you see just how they can save the day:

You’ve just arrived home from a weeklong family trip. You open the door from the garage and are met with the aroma of low tide on a 98-degree day in New Jersey. The culprit? That tuna casserole you threw in the trash bin and forgot to take outside before you left. Before you reach for the kerosene and matches (the house is obviously doomed at this point), you remember the bottle of Lemon essential oil you keep next to the sink. You take the trash out, open the windows, and add a few Lemon-saturated cotton balls to the bottom of the bin. Not only is the smell gone, but now you’re not sure if you’re in a kitchen or a blossoming orchard of lemon trees.

Choose the right refreshment

On a hot summer night, nothing sounds better than a refreshing cold treat. In the freezer, you have a carton of your favorite tropical-fusion ice cream, but you also have all the ingredients to make homemade fro-yo that will be a lot kinder to your waistline and wellness. You combine frozen coconut yogurt, mangos, oranges, a kiss of honey, and a couple drops of Lemon Vitality in a blender, and in no time, you have a warm-weather treat you can feel great about.

Brighten your mood

It’s 7 a.m. on a rainy Monday. You’re in the kitchen pulling out bowls and spoons for cereal, and you hear the kids running around upstairs fighting over who knows what. You didn’t get to bed until way too late last night because you had to finish the last episode of your favorite show, and you’re filled with regret. You’re tempted to just walk upstairs, hop back into bed, and let the children fend for themselves. As a final, last-ditch effort, you add a few drops of Lemon essential oil to your diffuser. Preheat oven to 225⁰ F. Use Thieves® Fruit & Veggie Spray to clean the fruit. With a mandolin or knife, thinly slice apples from top to bottom. In a small bowl, combine honey and Cinnamon Bark Vitality. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper and place apple slices on top. Drizzle honey mixture over apple slices. Cook in the oven for 90 minutes. Remove cookies sheets from heat and place apple slices on cooling rack. For best results, store apple chips in an airtight container and eat them within 24 hours.
